Compress Image shrinks JPG, PNG, and WebP photos by re-encoding them and, if you choose a smaller maximum dimension, scaling them down too — so a folder of camera photos turns into files small enough for email attachments or upload forms. The work happens in a background thread inside your browser, using the open-source browser-image-compression library, so nothing is sent to a server. Pick a target size like 'Balanced' for a good size-to-quality trade-off, or a smaller maximum dimension when you also want fewer pixels. The result card then shows exactly how much smaller each photo got.

Are my photos uploaded anywhere?

No. Compression runs in a Web Worker inside your browser tab, so the resizing and re-encoding happen without a network request in either direction. Your original photos and the compressed copies both stay on your device the entire time.

How much quality do I lose?

The compressor reduces dimensions and re-encodes smartly, so at 'Balanced' most photos stay sharp enough for screens and social posts. If you're printing or zooming in a lot, choose 'Light touch' or a larger maximum dimension to keep more detail. Very low target sizes on detailed photos can introduce visible blockiness.

What formats are supported?

JPG, PNG, and WebP go in and come back out in the same format — compression never changes the file type. For HEIC photos from an iPhone, convert them to JPG with our HEIC to JPG tool first, then compress the result here.

What's the largest file or batch I can compress?

Each photo can be up to 50 MB, and you can queue up to 20 images in a single run. Because everything happens in your browser's memory, very large batches take longer on older or low-memory devices.

Should I use Compress Image or Resize Image?

Compress Image focuses on file size — it re-encodes the photo and only shrinks dimensions if you ask for a small maximum. Resize Image works the other way around: you choose the exact width or percentage first, and the file size follows from that. Use Resize Image when you need a precise pixel width, like for a specific upload form.

Does compressing an image twice keep shrinking it?

A little, but with diminishing returns — most of the easy savings happen on the first pass, and repeated compression mainly re-applies the same quality loss. If a photo isn't shrinking as much as you'd like, try a smaller maximum dimension instead of compressing it again.

Why did one of my photos barely shrink?

Photos that are already small, low-detail, or previously compressed are often close to their practical minimum size already. Screenshots and graphics with flat colors also compress differently than photos, since there's less fine detail for the encoder to simplify.
